Why Women and the Ocean like Stream2Sea Leave-In Conditioner

Posted by Suzanne Van Hese on

Being a member of many women’s scuba and ocean loving groups, we see time and time again Stream2Sea Leave-In Conditioner being recommended by more than 70% of women.

Whether they be dive professionals or recreational divers, snorkelers, surfers or swimmers, the result of spending time in the ocean often leaves hair a tangled mess of knots.

Autumn Blum is the CEO, formulator and founder of Stream2Sea Biodegradable and Eco Friendly Hair and Body Care products.  She is a cosmetic chemist with over 15 years of experience formulating products for the natural skincare industry.  Needless to say she is also an avid and experienced scuba diver.  She too experienced the same problems with her hair after diving.

Her mission was to create a strengthening, non-greasy conditioner that doesn’t weigh down even thin, fine hair – but still holds up to a day of masks and hoods in saltwater.

All Stream2Sea products are eco conscious, biodegradable and proven to be reef safe and safe to marine life.  That means that they have been tested and proven safe for bait fish, freshwater fish, saltwater fish and coral larvae, and does not affect their natural behaviour.

You can rest assured that our reef safe leave-in conditioner has been rigorously tested to ensure the safest possible ingredients for you, our waterways and planet.

The Leave In Conditioner Formula

Instead of using synthetics, Stream2Sea Leave-In conditioner is made with the signature antioxidant blend of green tea, aloe, olive leaf and holy basil, then enriched the formula with extra keratin and panthenol.

It’s also formulated to be vegetarian, but it can’t claim vegan (unlike their other products) because it contains keratin, which is made from sustainably sourced sheep’s wool.

In Australia, we spend so much time outside in the sun, it is also important that haircare protects our strands and colour as well. The formula does a great job protecting the hair from UVB damage and reduces colour fading.

Salt, chlorine and the sun can all damage your hair. The added antioxidants, B-vitamins and keratin all help to counteract that damage.

How To Use:

To help protect your hair before diving, snorkelling, swimming or surfing,  rinse with fresh water if possible before applying the conditioner.

Squeeze an adequate amount from the tube and apply to damp hair.  Finger comb to distribute evenly.

Do not rinse.

Applying before your activity will give a protective coat to your hair follicles to prevent breakage.

You will find your hair is easy to detangle after your activity and it will leave your hair soft and manageable.

For maximum benefit, use after Stream2Sea Conditioning Shampoo and Body Wash.

What They Don’t Use

Most conditioners include ingredients like polyquaternium 10, propylene glycol and cyclopentasiloxane – any of which can make your hair look great, but are NOT great for our waters.

And, of course, from a reef-safe (and people-safe) perspective, the other ingredients that are not included are just as important as what is included:

  • Cylcopentasiloxane/cyclomethicone smooths hair follicles but has been shown to be toxic and to bio-accumulate in aquatic organisms. It is also suspected to be an endocrine disruptor in people.
  • Parabens, including propylparaben, benzylparaben, methylparaben and butylparaben, are common preservatives that mimic the hormone estrogen which is known to contribute to breast cancer. It is also implicated in coral disease.
  • Multiple preservatives, including diazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin and hydroxymethylglycinate, release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen in humans and toxic to fish and other wildlife.
  • Methylisothiazolinone is a widely used preservative but it’s also a skin irritant and is a likely allergen. Like many preservatives, it’s considered to be toxic in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Phthalates are commonly found in synthetic fragrances and are classified as endocrine disrupters than can interfere with normal brain function. They also block male hormones and can interfere with normal genitalia development.

Stream2products do not contain any octyl methoxycinnamate, oxybenzone or other benzene derivatives.  Nor do they include any parabens or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.

In addition, the reef safe leave-in conditioner tubes are made from biodegradable sugarcane resins (not plastic).

What Our Users Say

Courtney

This is my favourite Stream2Sea product. This leave-in conditioner has converted me to a leave-in believer. It saves a lot of water when you don't need to wash it out, which is important to us all, but especially so when on a boat where water is even more limited. It also completely detangles my long hair and leaves it super silky. A very happy surprise. You should not hesitate to try this along with the shampoo/body wash combo.

Zoe

I love this reef safe conditioner! It keeps my hair smooth and prevents knots after diving all day. Love love love! Ordering again now.

Jeanne

Left my long, fine hair free of tangles and smelling wonderful, even after using the shampoo and bodywash with saltwater! Works great and environmentally friendly, a win-win!

Heather

I have long, fine, highlighted hair, and it is A MESS in the ocean. This stuff is great. I run it through my hair before swimming and tie several hair ties in it. It comes out easy to comb through and NOT in a million knots, and I know it is not harming the ocean! I also use it as a detangler after showers. I really like this brand!
